Having lived and played in a Northern city for close to 20 years I have become a minor expert on cracked woodwinds. Not only is it cold and dry but we often have to play in drafty or cold halls a sure recipe for woodwind cracks. Read More

ImageThis is a Selmer series 10S clarinet and a Selmer recital  they are beautiful clarinets in great condition.
The A in particular does not play as one would expect however, response tuning and tone are poor.
These are usually very good clarinets. A quick check reveals that the pads do not cover, they are skin pads which have warped over time.

I am going to repad the top joint with cork pads on all keys which are usually in the closed position.
The other 2 keys will have traditional skin pads.

Saxophone Care

Basic things to do are:

First problem that comes up with cleaning the saxophone is the cleaning out of the inside
after playing. The usual saxophone swab ,consisting of a felt cloth, wire brush and string inevitably comes apart after a few uses, leaving bits of it stuck inside the saxophone.

It is much better to use the pull through type swabs that we sell( like a big clarinet swab) for the body and to use a
push through type cleaner for the neck part(snake).

Big fuzzy things that are stuck inside the Saxophone to clean it and are stored there are in most repairman's opinions a bad thing for your instrument, even if they are great for our business. Small bits of fiber come of and go everywhere, the tone hole rim, on the pads, in the mechanism but worst of all the moisture is trapped inside the instrument. The low D pad gets very dirty if the instrument is not swabbed out. Note how the tone hole rim has started to corrode.

Here is what the low d tone hole and pad can look like if not cleaned.
