Having lived and played in a Northern city for close to 20 years I have become a minor expert on cracked woodwinds. Not only is it cold and dry but we often have to play in drafty or cold halls a sure recipe for woodwind cracks. Read More

ImageThis is a Selmer series 10S clarinet and a Selmer recital  they are beautiful clarinets in great condition.
The A in particular does not play as one would expect however, response tuning and tone are poor.
These are usually very good clarinets. A quick check reveals that the pads do not cover, they are skin pads which have warped over time.

I am going to repad the top joint with cork pads on all keys which are usually in the closed position.
The other 2 keys will have traditional skin pads.

students on lessons with Simon

Read student and parent comments My  experience with Coles Woodwinds has been as a student of Simon Coles. I have been taking lessons for about 1 1/2 years. During that time, I have observed that Simon teaches his students techniques that he utilizes in his own playing. Because of his knowledge and understanding of woodwind instruments and of music in general, Simon is able to accommodate different learning styles through verbal suggestions and practical demonstrations. He ensures that the student understands what effect is desired by having him/her play using the technique which has just been explained. With practice, the student will notice how much his/her playing has improved in a short period of time. Concepts taught at one lesson are positively reinforced at the next. New material is introduced when the student is ready. If a student is having difficulty with a particular technique, Simon is able to diagnose the problem and work with the student to ensure he/she is able to employ proper methods to overcome it. By incorporating these practical ideas into their own practice routine, students gain confidence.

Another way Coles Woodwinds helps students become more self-assured is by providing opportunities for students to perform in a non-intimidating environment. To facilitate this, students are encouraged to participate in recitals held at the studio.

By being positive in his teaching techniques, Simon encourages students to be enthusiastic about their own playing (even during moments of frustration on the part of the student, of which I have had many!).

When choosing a music teacher it is important to find a person who is not only an excellent musician but who is able to convey musical ideas and techniques to students and have them respond whether they be children, teens or adults. If you or your children are interested in learning a woodwind instrument, Coles Woodwinds is the placeto go. Simon Cole, Principal Clarinetist, with the Prince George Symphony Orchestra, teaches clarinet, saxophone and flute. Erica Skowron, Principal oboist, teaches oboe, voice and recorder.

Ed. Note Karen has gone on to become a regular member of The Prince George Symphony and the solo clarinet of Sinfonia Prince George

Not having taken a lesson in 23 years I really didn't have any idea what to expect went I finally worked up enough courage to book a flute lesson with Simon. I was literally shaking in my boots when I arrived at my first lesson. I must say that I have been surprised and delighted with him as a teacher and with the progress I have been able to make. As a working mother with two small children living in Vanderhoof I am not able to take regular weekly lessons (although I would love to!)Simon's flexible schedule an online booking system make it possible for me to drop in for lessons when I am in PG. It is perfect for me at this time in my life. Even though I am not able to make "super rapid" progress this way, I am able to learn so much in an hour with Simon that I can take home and apply to everything I am working on alone. He has a great attitude and sense of humor that put me at ease in a very short time. He is able to diagnose problems and communicate solutions to me in a way that I understand and remember. He has a unique talent for getting to the root of the problem, that can make getting over the frustration so much easier. My confidence is building and I am much more comfortable playing in front of people than I even thought I could be. I Thank Simon so much for his help and can't express strongly enough what it has meant to me to be improving and being able to share the music with my family and friends. So, if you have a desire to learn to play, and maybe an instrument in your attic, work up some courage, dust off the case and go see Simon. You will be glad that you did!! I am :) Grateful *Mature* Student

From - "A Parent"
"I'm sure there are many parents that want their children to grow up with high self-esteem, discipline and a skill that sets them apart from the crowd. Other benefits include top performance in school (especially math), ability to perform in public and an appreciation for the arts. After all these years she still looks forward to every lesson. This amazing opportunity is why our family chose to remain in Prince George.
