New Music   by Simon Cole  A  theme moves through the places and events of a day. Music and video first intended for extended care homes as a way of reconnecting to basic human emotions and experiences but also as a concert piece. It can also be played by a small group of 3 or 4 with a backing track.

Generally this is how it works. This is really rough.

If you never practice.
You can have fun playing the instrument  (though not as much fun as you would have if you practiced)and learn a bit about music, Play in a low level group. Go to lessons (which then become guided practice) using you instrument to learn about music including its theory, history, how muscles work etc. You will improve (slowly) just playing in a group but lessons are all the more crucial since it’s easy to get off track.

If you practice 20 minutes most days or 30 minutes 2-3 times a week you can probably;

• Play in your school/community band
• Play a very simple solo piece in a concert but it might take you a long time to learn it.
• Have some fun

But you can’t;

• Play in a good group
• Play in orchestra
•  Take an exam
• Play in music festival

If you practice 30-45 minutes most days (5/7) and do what I tell you to do, you can probably

• Play in your school band and be one of the better players
• Play a solo pieces in a concert a few times a year
• Take an exam (but it will take you a long time to be ready for it) or play in the festival

But you can’t

• Play in a good group
• Play in an orchestra because there are few spots and they go to only the best
• Take an exam and do the music festival

   If you practice 1-2 hours most days (5/7) and do what I tell you to do, you can probably

• Play in your school band and probably be the best player
• Play a fancy solo pieces in a concert a few times a year
 • Take an exam and play in the festival
l• You have a good shot at getting into a local orchestra

But you can’t;

• get a job in music ( try 4 hours +)
