A couple of factual errors, but hey at least they spelled my name right. I played principal clarinet with Rishon LeZion orchestra 1990( they did the bulk of the opera work) and sadly most of the work has not been composed, so if I look unshaven and haggard at your next lesson , that's why.
Here is the press release from out local MLA:
PRINCE GEORGE – The B.C. Government has provided the Prince George Symphony Orchestra Society with $7,000 to commission a work by composer Simon Cole, says Prince George-Mount Robson MLA Shirley Bond.
According to the PGSOS, a large part of the work has already been completed and the funding may allow the symphonic work to be expanded. It is expected to be ready in early 2008 and the Prince George Orchestra may be performing it throughout northern B.C.
“British Columbia has a rich history of producing world-class arts, and our government continues to provide support to groups and individuals looking to build on our international reputation,” said Bond. “I look forward to enjoying this production when the work is complete.”
Cole has been the principle clarinet with the Prince George Symphony since the late 1980s and has performed internationally, including playing principle clarinet with the Israel state opera orchestra. Cole’s CD, “The Art of Melody,” was the first classical CD to ever come out of Prince George and has been sold internationally. His travelling group Alban Classical has toured remote communities giving performances in schools throughout British Columbia and the Yukon.
“We’d like to thank the provincial government for providing this funding,” said Barb Parker, Manager of the Prince George Symphony Orchestra Society. “This piece has the poignancy and relevance to serve as a bridge between Canadian cultures on a national level.”
$219,600 in Spirit of BC Arts funding has been awarded to commission 30 arts, cultural and heritage projects across the province. Funding for these grants is provided through the Spirit of BC Arts Fund, a $20-million special account created in 2001 to support increased arts and cultural activity leading up to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
Interest earned from the fund supports two programs: the Spirit of BC Opportunities Program, which helps arts and cultural organizations to realize creative projects that contribute to the development of arts and culture in B.C. and the Spirit of BC Commissioning Program, which focuses on funding the development and creation of original professional works of art. Applications are peer reviewed and competitively assessed.
