show upOne the things that makes up drop out of activities like music or sports is the feeling that we are not prepared for the class or didn't practice enough.

The cork covering the tenons of woodwinds is usually natural sheet cork. This not something you are likely to find at your local hardware store. It is very fine and close grained. Over time it will dry and compress. This can make the joints wobble and likely make them leak as well.

Like any closed society, orchestras have their own rules and standards of conduct, some are merely a matter of common sense but for a new player they are alas not always obvious, so here are some of the basics.

How to Practice

You can spend hours playing and get nothing done. Unless you practice every day with focus and in an intelligent way, you won't develop artistically or technically and you won't have the ability to express yourself.

Buying Instruments

clar3There are a lot of instrument makers out there offering a bewildering array of clarinets, flutes, saxophones at varying prices. For the beginner it can be hard to decide so here is some general advice.

You get what you pay for.(for the most part)

I often have customers say to me "why would I want to pay $900 for a new student clarinet when I can get this one on EBay for only $99?".
Well, what makes the difference between these instruments?

Training log

I have added a training log for those of us that like to workout. When you log in the link to it shows up in your menu. It's private so only you can see your entries. We need to stay in shape for life and for music. The hard part is getting started, here is a trick I use; do 1 push up then 1 sit up, 1 squat then kick the heavy bag 1 time with each leg. That wasn't so bad. now do 2 push ups,and 2 sit ups, 2 squats and kick the bag twice with each leg. Work your way up to 20. You will have done 210 push ups 210 sit ups ,210 squats and kicked the bag 420 times. Now your warmed up so on to the main workout :). Don't forget to stretch ( and consult a doctor before engaging in any exercise program) oh you can also use it to track your practice time as wellSmile.
