One the things that makes up drop out of activities like music or sports is the feeling that we are not prepared for the class or didn't practice enough.
The cork covering the tenons of woodwinds is usually natural sheet cork. This not something you are likely to find at your local hardware store. It is very fine and close grained. Over time it will dry and compress. This can make the joints wobble and likely make them leak as well.
Like any closed society, orchestras have their own rules and standards of conduct, some are merely a matter of common sense but for a new player they are alas not always obvious, so here are some of the basics.

Don't be a selfish musician.
Most adult students are pessimistic about their ability to learn an instrument. I blame conventional thinking, you know” the can't teach an old dog new tricks” attitude.
